Site Description and Habitats

The paved greenway is over 10 miles long with several spur trails. One large bridge over the Stones River is present with multiple fishing access areas. The trail connects to the Stones River National Battlefield and other parks and places of interest in the area. One can spend an entire day exploring the greenway and the adjacent National Battlefield.

This area has been underbirded and little information has been submitted to eBird or posted on local list serves, but the potential is great.

Bird species of interest

Spring and Fall Migration: Summer Tanager, Black-throated Green Warbler, Philadelphia and Blue-headed Vireo, and Magnolia Warbler

Summer: Yellow-crowned Night-herons can be found if you look closely. Song Sparrow, Indigo Bunting, Eastern Kingbird, Chimney Swift, Barn Swallow, Red-eyed Vireo.

Winter: Song and White-throated Sparrow, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Brown Creeper, and Red-breasted Nuthatch.

Year-Round: Resident species like Northern Cardinal, American Robin, Great Blue Heron, and House Finch, Mourning Dove, Red-tailed Hawk are regular.

Detailed directions for birding Stone River Greenway
Numerous access points can be found on a nice map of the Greenway. Popular access points are on Thompson Lane a mile north of Murfreesboro Rd (Broad St Trailhead), Cason Trail Trailhead, and the College Street Trailhead which has a dog park, play ground, and restrooms.

The greenway is 8-10 feet wide its entire length and is nice to explore on foot or bike. There are noeally good hot spots here, but birding is nice everywhere.

Fees and Hours
Open during day light hours, year round, occasionally closed due to flooding of the Stones River. There are no fees associated with use.

There are restroom facilities at some parking lots.
